How to use Polygloss 90 with Titanium Dioxide?

About Polygloss 90:

Polygloss 90 is the premium extender for semi- and high-gloss coatings. It is a milled, ultrafine, hydrous kaolin, best suited to extend titanium dioxide and resin in semi and high-gloss paints. Polygloss 90 is designed to optimize properties such as contrast ratio and gloss. Exceptional ease of dispersion enables Polygloss 90 to be used to maximize production rates and minimize energy input in all paint manufacturing.

Narrow Particle Size Distribution

Tightly controlled particle size and particle size distribution allow Polygloss® 90 to effectively replace a portion of titanium dioxide  without sacrificing important properties such as opacity, gloss, or tint strength.

polygloss90Benefits:

  • Effective spacing of TiO2
  • Gloss retention
  • Opacity retention
  • Block resistance
  • Binder extension

Paint Study

Paints containing Polygloss® 90 along with reduced levels of titanium dioxide compare very favorably to paints containing TiOalone. Similarly, when testing other properties, such as stain resistance, block resistance, reflectance, and viscosity, no  ignificant variances were shown.

Substituting TiO2 with kaolin by volume vs. weight.

There is a significant specific gravity difference that must be kept in mind when formulating with ultrafine hydrous clay. In order to maintain gloss, Polygloss® 90 should be substit uted for titanium dioxide at equivalent pigment volume concentration. To maintain equivalent volume, one part by weight of TiO2 should be replaced with about 0.65 parts by weight of Polygloss® 90.

Taking Advantage of Polygloss® 90

Typically, a 5-15% reduction in TiO2 and/or up to 10% resin reduction is achievable. Customer evaluation is recommended to determine optimum levels and cost-saving potential.

Instructions:
  1. Input your Titanium Dioxide loading (grams/liter).
  2. Input your Titanium Dioxide Cost ($/kilogram).
  3. Input Polygloss® 90 Cost ($/kilogram)
  4. Finally input the amount of TiO2 you’ll substitute in your formulation for Polygloss® 90 (%).

polygloss90Reduce Formulation Cost

Often the most expensive ingredients in coating formulations are resin and TiO2. By using Polygloss®90, formulators can replace a portion of TiO2 and resin, reducing the overall formulation cost.

Higher Gloss Potential

The plate-like morphology of Polygloss 90 and its narrow particle size distribution provide superior gloss performance compared to traditional mineral extenders.

Reduce Resin

Polygloss®90 may aslo be used to reduce resin demand. Replacing coarser pigments with Polygloss 90 allows an increase in PVC while maintaining gloss targets.

Reduce Titanium Dioxide

The efficient particle spacing of Polygloss®90 maximizes contrast ratio at reduced TiO2 loading levels. The unique particle size of Polygloss 90 along with KaMin’s dispersion technology minimize the agglomeration of TiO2 particles.
