Zinc Pyrithione As Booster Biocides in Anti Corrosive Paints

Zinc Pyrithione Powder is an off-white colour, micronized, industrial grade powder. It exhibits a significant growth inhibiting activity against a broad spectrum of both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria besides bacteria, Fungi, yeast and Mold. Its negligible solubility in water makes it a preferred biocide in Soft Fouling Marine paint applications
Segment.

Fungus and mildew can quickly damage paints and coatings. To test anti-fungal and anti-algal protection of biocide blends effectively, an environment high in humidity must be utilized during testing. Zinc Pyrithione's combination of fungicidal and algaecide activities make it an attractive addition to the existing arsenal of booster biocides.

Zinc Pyrithione can be added during one of the early stages of the paint manufacturing process, together with pigments and fillers.

Product application: As Antifungal agent in soft fouling Marine Paints, Sealants, Caulks, Grouts and patching compounds. Flooring Adhesives, Roofing ,Coated Fabrics, Wall covering and Leather cloth, Flexible Films, Foils and Sheet, Rigid Film, Sheet Extrusion and Injection Molding, Shoe uppers and Liners, Rubber Vulcanizations and Tyres.

Product industry: PVC, PU, Polyolefin, Adhesives & Water-based sealants, Inks and pigments, Polymers & Slurries, Building products, other applications, Coatings (dry-film biocides).

Anti Corrosive Properties
Zinc pyrithione fungicides were designed to replace organotin-based paint formulations that contain copper at higher concentrations, which has an adverse impact on marine organisms and the environment. Zinc pyrithiones offer a sustainable solution with excellent toxicity, water solubility, thermal stability and alkaline pH stability, making them superior alternatives that don’t cause yellowing of white surfaces like chlorothalonil.

Anti Fungal Properties
Zinc pyrithiones not only prevent microbial degradation, but they can also prevent mildew and algae growth, helping preserve paints, coatings, surfaces, as well as against odors, staining, discoloration and corrosion.

Anti Bacterial Properties
Zinc pyrithione has been demonstrated to be effective against various species of fungus and bacteria, through chemical interactions with certain iron-sulfur proteins, leading to their oxidation and eventual cell death.

Zinc Pyrithione is an effective anti-fungal agent for use in paints. It’s especially useful in combatting mildew and algae found on boats, although it’s safe to use on all surfaces including wood. Zinc pyrithione can be combined with other biocides to form a multi-functional, aqueous system and then added to paint formulations to prevent microbial degradation and degradation of starting materials, such as plastics, polymers and latexes.
